Just wanna share about my attachment at Jabatan Farmasi, Pusat Kesihatan USM.(This is another aktiviti berfaedah yang aku buat after exam habes) Myself, asykin and nina were attached there for 3weeks. Actually, we decided to apply for this attachment for the purpose of learning and preparing ourself before we start our clinical year next semester.(FYI, it is not compulsory for us to do this attachment). Bunyi macam rajin je kan? Padahal sebab bosan cuti lama sangat..XD
Working hours: 8.15a.m untill 5.15pm
A lil bit about Jabatan Farmasi, Pusat Kesihatan USM : It's just a small outpatient center which provides/dispenses medicines for/to patients. Besides, they are using kind of e-prescribing system where there is no longer writing prescription from doctors. By using computerised system, doctor will prescribe medicines for the patients online, and it will be sent directly to the pharmacy department. Therefore, pharmacists can prepare the medicines before patients come to the pharmacy and it minimizes the waiting time for patients. We are also be able to see patients' past treatment/medical history via this system.

Therefore, pharmacists can prepare the medicines before patients come to the pharmacy and it minimizes the waiting time for patients. We are also be able to see patients' past treatment/medical history via this system.
Well, i would say it was a precious experience and yeah we did learn something. We are very much lucky to have Miss Chong (the pharmacist there) and the other supporting staffs (assistant pharmacist,nurses) who willing to teach us almost everything and never scold us whenever we did mistakes. We were being treated like their own family and the most important is they welcomed us(student yg blurrr dan tak tahu apeape) with warm arms. There are 1pharmacist, 5 assistant pharmacists, 1@2store keeper and another 1 person is doing some sort of packaging and labelling.
Well well well the best part of this attachment adalah almost everyday we had either free breakfast or lunch..heheh..Miss Chong sangatlah generous, she is the one who bought all those foods. One of the staff did mentioned to us; if it is not because of the high cholesterol level Ms Chong is having now, she will definitely buy nasi kandar for her staffs almost everyday. Plus, they will celebrate the staff's birthday by having some makan2, singing birthday song, chit-chatting, gosipping etc etc.. Not only free foods ya know, Miss Chong jugak selalu gave us a ride setiap kali nak balik hostel. Mane nak cari bos baek macam tu? ce citee...
Ok, enough about food..heheh.. Basically, what we were doing there everyday was helping the assistant pharmacist to get the medicines prepared before patients come in. It's not an easy job ya know. We need to ensure that there is the right medicine for the right person, right route of administration, right dosing, plus checking for any drug allergy, drug-drug/drug-food interactions, explaning the proper way of using the medicine etc etc.. We are dealing with patients' life and for me it is indeed a big responsibility. Pharmacist do only only sitting in front of the counter and then dispensing the medicines, "ni makan 2 kali sehari selepas mkn bla bla bla..That's how public see us. They get the wrong perception towards our job. T___T . (Sedih plak rase.)
Well, in hospital setting pharmacist job does not restricted in the outpatient department(OPD) only. There are another difficult job/responsibilities for those working in inpatient department, cytotoxic drug reconstitution (CDR), pharmacy satellite,therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM), enforcement etc etc banyak lagi la. tak larat nak tulis. rasa macam poyo la pulak..heheh..termerepek pjg2.nak citer bende laen sebenarnye tadi.:D
Besides helping the staffs there, we were also given an assignment by Ms Chong. (ingatkan keje tak de dah assignment, rupenye ade lagi..T___T) We were asked to conduct a small campaign on hypertension. All the materials for the campaign was prepared by us based on our own creativity (hehehe). It was a 2days campaign aiming to give informations on antihypertensive medicine for those suffering from hypertension. Not only that, we were also asked by Ms Chong to conduct a counselling session for the patients. It is not an easy task because we learnt about hypertension quite a long time ago. Just so you know, selalunya patients yang menghidap hypertension selalunya ada diabetes and high cholesterol level jugak. Jadi nak tak nak, we were forced to revise again what we had learnt before. (heheh bagus jugak tu) .
To counsel the patient was a nerve breaking task for me.(Walaupun tak de markah XD). Macam-macam jenis patients ada. So, you need to be prepared! (Walaupun ilmu di dada seciput je. Buat2 yakin aje). Ada yang sangat knowledgeable, keep on asking questions sampai kita pun tak mampu nak jawab. Ada jugak yang garang and siap marah2 lagi. Ada yang dengar explanation penuh khusyuk, tapi bila tnya balik sebenanye tak paham pun ape ktorg ckp. All in all, i would say communication skills is the utmost important skills that pharmacist need to have. Language also important, sometimes it's hard to translate scientific word from English to Malay while explaining to patients.(Bila explain in Malay la kan). Whatever it is, you need to excell in both Malay and English language. Using layman term while explaining will help a lot to make sure patients understand. And of course you need to have good knowledge, no doubt.
Ms Chong did advices us, "you can't just simply counsel the patient, saying this and that, offering solutions for their problem, no you cant. What you need to do is, listen carefully what their problems are. Read between the lines. Then, only you can offer solutions or give advices. That's the best way!
And as a pharmacist, no matter what, we have to keep on learning and equipped ourselves with current information/knowledge because there are many new drugs being produced and available in the market nowadays."
Banyak lagi nasihat berguna from Ms Chong, tak larat nak tulis dah. Basically, yang kat atas tu yang paling penting dan aku ingat. Semoga aku ingat sampai bila-bila. (Tulis kat sini sebab aku ni pelupa.huhu)
Banyak lagi nak kena belajar sebenarnye, ni baru small outpatient center. Belum masuk hospital lagi. Macam mane nak masuk final year ni..huwaaaaaa....T__T
